From ballet slippers to breakbeats, and from street cyphers to salsa circles, Jamal Bermudez aka “Mally Mambo,” has danced through a lifetime of rhythm and soul. A Bronx native, Jamal began his journey in classical ballet at a young age, drawn to the discipline and elegance of the form. But it was during the explosive rise of Hip-Hop in the 1980s—right in his own backyard—that he found a new calling. Immersed in the raw energy of B-boy culture, Jamal became a fixture in the breakdancing scene, where creativity, community, and self-expression reigned.
As he matured, Jamal felt a deep pull toward his cultural roots. This led him to explore and embrace the vibrant world of Latin dance, including salsa, cha-cha, and Afro-Cuban folkloric traditions. These styles allowed him to connect with his Cuban heritage and broaden his artistic expression, blending grace, power, and storytelling through movement.
Today, Jamal teaches out of several studios across New York City and is a regular instructor for outdoor dance programs in city parks and community spaces. His passion is palpable, his joy contagious, and his talent undeniable. Whether performing or teaching, Jamal brings people together through dance, inspiring others to move, express, and celebrate life—one step at a time.
